Importance in American History…

The Offices at Mill Park Commons has a rich and distinctive history dating back to the turn of the eighteenth century as one of the original production facilities of the Springfield National Armory. In 1777, during the initial years of the American Revolutionary War, Commander George Washington had scouted and approved the final location of the National Springfield Armory, after it was referred to him by his artillery chief General Henry Knox. Although Springfield was a growing town during the time, Springfield, Massachusetts offered unignorable geographical advantages—it lay at the intersection of three strategic rivers (including the most important at the time, Connecticut River), and was the epicenter of four major roads connecting New York City, Boston, Albany, and Montreal. Sometime shortly after, when arms manufacturing became more important, the arsenal expanded to other locations south and west within Springfield, where water power was available. Around that time, the Mill River was dammed to form a mile-long lake called the Watershops Pond. The main shops were located behind the original dam. A foundry and a mill were built just below the dam itself. The Offices at Mill Park Commons is located where the original mill once stood. It’s origional role was to mill all of the wood that would be utilized for the manufacturing of the Springfield Rifle.

The Mill Park Office Commons is now locally owned and managed by Icarian Realty for the past decade.
